- Sound advice ...

I own a small (me and one other person) IT company, and we both love what we do, and know it fairly well (Anyone that says they know everything about computers and networking is either lying or delusional) ... neither of us have any certifications due mainly to the fact that we are too busy fixing what certified people did to go out and GET the certifications.
Unfortunately, the lure of gobs of money created an enormous workforce of "qualified" but inept people - I am not talking about the people that can actually do the job without having to guess, or constantly refer back to the text books they learned from, but the people that just don't get it.
The IT field (programming, networking, security, hardware repair - all of it) is a lot like cooking ... if you don't have the knack, or the basic comprehension of what's going on, all the training it the world is not going to make you a great chef - while you will be better than most, you'll never be in the "upper crust" - True chefs (like true techies) are born with it, they live and breath it - they don't even have to think about it, because it just makes sense to them.
To give a personal example, I have my Grade 7 in Royal Conservatory Piano (10 is the highest), but I do not consider myself a musician - I just don't have the knack - I know grade 4s that can play better than me - I may know more technical stuff about playing, they just don't KNOW they know it, because they just get it.
I actually worked with a guy who had twelve certifications, including his NT Certs - he didn't even know how to set up a user on NT 4.0 ...
I am well aware that my comments may offend some, and my apologies for that ... please remember, I am nobody, and it's just my opinion.
