The UNIX market may have been depressed for a number of reasons.
The number 1 would be the rise of Linux then there is HP-UX being forced onto IA-64, the death of tru-64 etc....
AIX sales were not too bad in that period so I think there was more to that dip than you make out. Back then Sun was moonlighting as a Linux company and suffering the McNealy legacy too.
