Rock on!
Which CPU took longer to reach the market, Rock or Viking? Viking never actually made it to market, and in the meantime the slow@ss SPARC2's were overrun by the (speedy) first 100Mhz processor (HP735). Those 3 (5?) long years for Sun defined how inept it is at bringing out new technology. How is today's Sun any different?

IBM will continue to dominate the server market as it crowds HP and Sun out of the datacenter. The last and worst UNIX (AIX) will continue to be IBMs carrot to Linux's stick i.e. IBM will continue to push customers toward Linux - and then when customers start to understand the X-series limitations, IBM will offer the Faustian bargain - switch to AIX (at 10x the cost)!

HP's "me too" so-called "marketing" of their servers will pale in comparison to Sun (the ultimate insult). Hurd will continue to stress printing, PCs, and services - while mealy-mouthing anything server-like. Trying to absorb a quality organization like EDS should take just about 2 more CEOs . . .

The Big3 will have an increasingly harder time to find IT talent. GM especially has been having a hard time filling its IT ranks (it uses IBM Global Services for much of its IT "talent"). One recruiter called me to see if I wanted an IT Architect job (Sun virtualization!) at GM. They had 4 positions open and needed to be filled by the end of the year (this was mid-December). I said I wanted $75/hour and they told me that they could accommodate that. I wasn't interested in working at a sinking ship like GM so I told them if GM got the loan, I would reconsider (I won't). Ford's brilliance was to bar any former Ford employee from working as a contractor. IOW if GM has trouble finding ANYONE, then Ford should have bigger trouble because they concentrate on a subset of ANYONE. Chrysler is in death-watch mode, so their IT troubles are acute. My friends there tell me that they avoid contact with management - lest they get singled out for "separation".

Will the FBI get their new computer system? Will the FAA get a working air traffic control system to replace their Sperry mainframe-based CRT stuff? I say no. The government is too inept to do anything right when it comes to IT. Except for the spec for the Ada PL . . .

I have a job - and that will be the greatest achievement of anyone in IT for 2009 . . .
