- Not a big Perl fan but...

I'm not a big Perl fan, but languages are always worth learning, if only to open your mind to interesting approaches.
There does seem the a kind of feature wars going on with languages at the moment, where once quite simple and focused languages are incorporating ideas from other places, but becoming increasing complex. I have mixed feelings about that. (Except Java, which has ground to a halt!)
As for choice of language for the competition - should they really care? It's the *algorithm* they want, and they can re-code the thing anyway they like.
