Ironically
Microsoft owes a lot of its success - especially at the server - to Unix. In the 1980's the unix wars had every major hardware vendor create their own proprietary version of Unix in order to stiffle competition and keep prices up. That created a window of opportunity for Microsoft to establish itself in the lower end of the market and build their server business from there. Remember that although Linux is the fastest growing server OS, Windows is *also* growing its market share. Both at the expense of the old-time Unixes, of which only a few remain. Solaris being on the losing end.
