When you factor in the future value ...
.. of money Windows will cost you more even if all of the assumptions about TOC are correct. With Windows you have to expense the funds during the initial purchase, funds that would have been diverted to earn interest. If the software was serviced with debt then the interest payments on the principal.

The higher salaries for Linux administration is an ongoing expense that is amortized over the 5 year period. Once you factor in the future value of money or the cost to service the debt minus the amortized cost of higher salaries Windows will cost you more.

By paying Microsoft, which is a foreign country in these markets, this will reduce the country's national income since the multiplier effect is reduced by imports. If you pay for local technical labor the difference in salaries stays within the country's borders increasing the ratio of the multiplier which in turn raises the national income.

Also the difference in higher salaries is taxed as income so the government will also receive some of these dollars that would have been shipped out of the country. These dollars then can be used for additional benefit to the health and well being of that nation.

Once you factor these variables into the equation Windows will have a higher economic cost than Linux. happy
