So many managers. An employee without a management title will feel overlooked.


Murph, you outline the functional groups for your organization based on the leader. That means the effectiveness of each one of those groups relies on that leader. And everything changes, even lapses with the departures and arrivals of leaders.

Microsoft is an example. Reading company blogs, success or failure of a project often seems associated with who's assigned to lead it. And the careers of managers are tracked to predict effectiveness. When someone departs or is promoted, there are discussions of what will happen to the quality of the product.

As bad as committee structures are, I think they're better than reliance on a single individual. The people involved have specific authority and responsibility, of course, but none is in charge of outcomes.

There are two sides to this, I recognize. Still want to uphold the other?
