Scientific vs. Data Processing: Did you just switch sides?
Even in a research institute, most of the people will use
boring finance and word processing applications that are
well supported on all the major computing platforms. On
the other hand, niches are critical to the real work of the
institute. Yeah, that's another extreme example. My point
is that niche applications are often mission critical to
individual organizations. A research institute is going to
have a lot of niches but it seems to me that most
organizations will have at least one mission critical niche
application. This is part of the risk analysis but saying risk
analysis doesn't make the importance of the mission
critical niche go away.

Yeah, my particular niche is well supported on Unix and OS
X. From my perspective, it's even decently supported on
Linux. I'm just not going to wave off the niches so
cheerfully as you seem to in this particular column.
