Interesting.
I think many IT failures are due to misundersyanding the company's business model. The nuances if you will. This is another reason to develop internally.

To take it one step further. There are many good IT personnel that only understand IT. They don't understand the marketing, accounting, production, etc. There is no way they can produce quality IT for their company without understanding these facets. Developing internally is not enough in these situations.

Asking an IT person to be all these things is a lot to ask. But if you want true innovation it's another layer that has to be there.
