Wintel is a bit - well, 'legacy'
Those kids that get XP rather than OSS olpcs will miss out on the rather more interesting experience. Certainly, for learning about computing, XP can hardly be regarded as an honest opportunity.
Agree about editing and recompiling software though - it luckily isn't needed TOO often!. Reminds me of the British motorcyle manufacturers during the forties and fifties, who thought that the average owner ENJOYED taking their engine apart on Sundays trying to make it run well and oil-tight.
