Open Architecture
Many of the issues with Windows are actually extend from open
architecture. The solution isn't to replace one monoculture with
another. Nor is the solution the continued service of the feudal tech
economy that Microsoft has given us. The computer is now more code
than silicon and Psystar has made it clear how few lifeboats are
available for the tech economy if a monoculture has a crisis of
confidence. There has been a preoccupation with fake hardware
choice, that is, the choice between motherboards from different parts
of the same Chinese province, or different colours of extruded plastic.
It has obscured the real choice between different chip architectures
and operating systems. Why contribute any more to this confusion?

To say the desktop is dead and that Apple is now pandering to gadget
fetishists is pretty reductive. The iPhone is OSX and OSX is the iPhone
so having it legally cracked on the desktop is to have it cracked on all
the devices Apple may ever make.

I'm seeing some froth from other contributors presumably because
Apple doesn't owe them a living and for some reason, they think they
should. Surely you could imagine a better way to propagate Unix than
stealing Apple's work? Let someone else start the grand egalitarian
experiment from BSD on out. Apple deserves to get paid at this point.
If for no other reason than reminding us what a competitive landscape
should look like. Among the fourth, fifth and sixth great operating
systems there may be a "Murphix" that gains some grassroots support
and earns enough money to further stimulate competition, further
champion it's open source origins, and further endorse cross platform
interoperability.
