Hmm, its that alternate reality again.
I read through this, and your example is impecable, makes perfect, and I'm left wondered why none of my customers use Sun hardware.

And of the course, the reason is that in my reality, the vast majority of enterprises are SME's, and they don't spend anything like this on hardware. High capital expenditure is never welcome and seldom possible, and a huge number of their IT problems are solved with a 1U Dell rack server for less that $2500. Maybe even less that $1000.

Do they sometimes end up with a rack-full of single-purposed, under-utilized commodity servers that sit a luke-warm multi-purposed utility room, and barely get looked at? Well, let me say, there's no "sometimes" about it.

You can say want you like about the sanity and elegance of doing this, but the bottom line is that this is a functional and affordable IT model for companies who comprise >80% of the economy, and Microsoft and Dell (etc) understand this very well.

When you say "...combination beats Wintel hands down on jobs large enough to matter", I think what I am saying is, what about on jobs that are small enough to be relevant?
