Japan is special
Japan is a special case. In Japan, people waste a tremendous amount of money on tech gadgets. People still like to have a single device that does all their need. And that's your PC. I'm not sure how this applies to the US, but for most of the world, having one console, one cell phone, one digital camera, one PDA, one notebook, one Desktop, one flat TV, etc per person is not affordable. PCs are cheap, specially since you can buy a 3 year-old system and use it for what 90% of people's needs.
