I think the real story of Intel Tigerton/Caneland and AMD Barcelona is the real arrival of x86 "Big Iron". Sure, it has existed for years (Sequent and DG, then IBM and Unisys), but now it is affordable and real. It has great virtualization with VMware ESX and Intel VT and AMD-V. It runs Windows, Linux, and Solaris.
I think x86 for the first time poses a real threat to back-end RISC/UNIX. Powerful, dual-core, two-socket x86 servers has significantly impacted RISC/UNIX in the midrange. Now they can handle larger back-end tasks, like databases, and consolidation of multiple midrange server workloads.
What Sun's UltraSPARC T2 and Victoria Falls processors bring to the mix is it keeps SPARC relevant in this space. Likewise, IBM has its "Q-model" systems which cram more cores into its lower-end RISC/UNIX machines. - Posted by: meh130@...
