The green screen days
Actually I have had these very clerks complain about how hard the GUI application was to use in comparison with the green screen application it replaced (and how inefficient the GUI was).

Of course only a Unix enthusiast would immediately associate green screen with command line.

GUI is often highly misleading and icons are often a means of miscommunication. Take for example the hand held palm forwards. In western Europe and North America it means "stop". In Greece it means "here's sh*t in your face" (at least the Greeks feel MS and Apple are being candid with them), in Iraq it apparently means "come here" - which probably accounts for a lot of innocents getting shot at American check points.

I grow more and more persuaded by Neil Postman's thesis that the replacement of a culture based on words with a culture based on images goes hand in hand with the erosion of rational thought.

As for CRUD, you really are a die hard DP guy aren't you Murphy - maybe you should take the trouble to acquaint yourself with some modern thinking in data management?
