The era of vast productivity gains is over
When a business went from no computers to having computers it had a massive boost in productivity. No changes since have been comparable to that boost. Everything done since is "fiddling". That is why I take advertising campaigns like "upgrade from xxx to yyy and drive costs down" with a huge pinch of salt.

More productivity gains will not come until there is another paradigm shift similar to that in the 'no computers' -> 'computers' event. So in that respect, your Mac Plus comparison tells us what should be obvious - that nothing has really changed.

Will the 'net and SOA be the new way? I don't know, but it seems to be the only thing on the horizon.
