Now, in reality, Intel concentrated on selling megahertz, not processing performance - a 3.0Ghz dual core "woodcrest" is a blinding 18% faster than its 2Ghz counterpart - more comparisons here - but the really important point everyone missed is that Intel's announcement was about manufacturing, but signalled a strategic reversal: they're getting back into the gigahertz game.

Or not. Practically speaking, high-K gate dielectrics are necessary at the 45 nm node regardless of clock speed because otherwise the leakage current from all of those gates makes any large circuit suck intolerable amounts of juice (and seriously limit the lowest speed they can run at, BTW -- any even moderately high-performance circuit uses dynamic logic.)

However, that's way too much to expect of the Press. "Faster clock speed" is about all we're inclined to trust them not to totally garble.
