Apple has always concentrated on the experience to the exclusion of even economy. The presentation of that -- what -- $500 iPhone left me as cold as the Playstation 3, though once again as I listened to Jobs describe it I was impressed by his commitment to the aesthetics of industrial design and his role as a technological impressario.
When Apple began it was a value because its display technology pushed the envelope farther than anyone else did, and of course it was new that computers were accessible. How many times have you heard MacPaint called the killer app of its time?
Some years back we reached the point where it became feasible for our screens to display as many hues as we could determine the human eye can sense. While this certainly doesn't end the possibilities for the development of graphics, but it has made it harder and much of the recent development seems geared more towards maximizing profits.
I'm not saying Apple is evil. Jobs can do what he wants, but he probably could have revitalized the server market at the turn of the century if he had introduced some models more geared towards media shops which require the kind of cutting edge he likes while being willing to pay the kind of price points he likes to charge. iMacs were good, but they weren't anywhere near those machines, which are indeed very hard and expensive to make.
The real money lately has been coming from consumer products. The roll-outs yesterday were a cell phone and a TV projector, and the financial media, rightly, made the point that they are changing their name to Apple, Inc -- no more computers.
I don't think they are getting out, I just think that Nvidia, ATI et al. are making it impossible for them to do business the way they like: by giving us awesome, cutting edge technology and charging us through the nose for it.
Apple doesn't LIKE cutting prices that way. It doesn't help them build the machines they want to build. I'm not suggesting this is right or wrong: it's just Apple. - Posted by: jplatt39 Posted on: 01/10/07 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
