Regarding people working independently, well with "always online" communication technologies like UMTS coming along there is no need for mobile workers to have laptops anymore (just a mobile terminal).

As regards cost I think you save the additional costs very quickly by not having a very complicated device on everyones' desktop that has to maintained and supported.

Having worked with systems in the past that had "intelligent" dumb terminals I can testify to the robustness, simplicity and user-friendliness of this approach.
