The world is dangerous you say? Yes it is, always has been. Those pesky dinosaurs didn't respect human rights at all. The real fear though is history has proven over and over, our own government has and will abuse every authority ever granted to it. Ask the Japanese Americans about how their S.S. number was used to round them up like sheep.
The fact is, police, government employees, etc. are nothing more than a cross section of the general population. There is nothing especially "good" about them. Tell you what, pick 50 random people. 2 of them are sex offenders, 8 have a felony record, 1 belongs to a subversive group, etc. etc..
