Open source DOES NOT work better. It may save you some money, that is if you have administrators and help desk staff that know open source operating systems and applications as well as they know proprietary products, but other than the Linux operating system, a few programming tools, a couple server applications, and a still maturing, incompatible office suite and the often-cited Gimp, open source has nothing else to offer. It lacks the huge range of application software available for Windows and to a lesser degree for the Mac, and most of the applications available are incomplete, half-hearted gestures. The whole open source movement reminds me of a bunch of hobbyists who lose enthusiasm halfway through a project and move on to something else without completing and polishing anything they produce. Why? There is no incentive to do so!
Open Office is a memory-intensive resource hog, slow as a dog. While Linux itself may run better on an older machine than the latest version of Windows, if you add a GUI and Open Office, the whole thing grinds to a halt.

Open source advocates need to stop preaching to the converted and do something to bring open source software up to Windows and Mac standards. Then you may actually have something to crow about.
