Murph, you know that
hardware is a very small part of the overall cost of a system. Buying hardware because of cost is really being penny wise and pound foolish. Hey I saved 5 grand by buying this Sun workstation - no lets add on Oracle for 50 grand and get a Sun maintenance contract for a grand a month, plus plus plus.

Sun's strategy of using 4 watt SunRays in every cubicle is a MUCH more effective way of cutting overall power consumption. If you are worried about heat generation, you could move to the next level and use the Cray "magic clear liquid" cooling (a submerged data center!). However, most modern data centers can handle hot boxes (except for dense blade servers), and you pay for 24/7 cooling (I ALWAYS wondered why in Michigan in the winter, its 30 degrees outside, but your data center air conditioners are running INSIDE . . .
