linux, windows, drm, perfect together
I don't think that the issues with using windows and linux concurrently will stay for long, in fact with microsoft finally seeing their vision for webtv to it's ultimate conclusion, I have a feeling that windows will become much more of a "multimedia" platform, and linux's chance of becoming compatible would be less and less likely. Users and institutions may finally start to see the light with linux, since no-one wants to replace all those non conforming monitors so someone can watch a quicktime video of a cad rendering.

That said, I hope that linux does not embrace the drm conventions and the ridiculous attempt to reinvent the wheel to satisfy hollywood. The pirates are NOT average users, and the fact is they will always exist. Microsoft is under the gun since it promoted mp3's and copying cd's, dvd's and other materials initially to get people to buy a computer since it would have other uses than "surfing the web", which at the time was a 56kbs modem line horror.
I believe that there will always be a place for computers, those clunky boxes that provide a portal to knowledge, exploration, and thought aside from the multimedia experience that has become our society. So it's boring, who says work has to be "fun" or exciting? If it was it would be called play and we would all do it for free. Who really needs to watch the latest movie at work? (and pay extra for an operating system, computer and monitor on the off chance we would) I have a feeling that there will become somewhat of a split very soon, and that is probably what Sun is betting on.
Workstations don't need the bells and whistles, and really should be geared towards performance, not reality tv. I think that microsoft has reached the crossroads, hollywood or boise idaho, factory or living room, as much as they want to I don't believe they can do it all, since they've been having a rough time doing one thing really well already. Windows is like old american cars, flashy, powerful, and shoddily built compared to imported rivals.(the american auto industry spent years regaining market share to the japanese) Vista may provide the "gas crisis of the 70's" as a launch point for companies to "show their stuff"
I for one do not believe in a monoculture, as it's antiamerican. Microsoft is not a natural monopoly, just a big player, gaining weight.

Maybe the DRM is a good thing after all since maybe we'll finally get some work done.
