While the concerns you have are theoretical, Google books has had REAL and beneficial effect.
In Tokyo, where the largest program in Japan to teach Japanese children English doesn't have a clue about how to prepare children for Jr. High where they will have to read English well, Google books provided extremely valuable information to point the way to teaching methods in line with current research.
