I've been saying for years now how the idea of "privacy" through
anonymity on the Internet is incredibly ignorant. It's like saying that
anytime I leave my house I can put on a costume and take off my car's
license plate, and leave my ID on my bedside table and tell anyone
who asks that my name is "Mr. Spock," and be offended if anyone
tried to disagree with me.
The real answer is to assign pass keys to anyone wanting access to the
Internet that is directly traceable to them. And everyone can see who
is who, and it's the real who. Maybe then there'd be some individual
responsibility and restraint displayed, plus a hurdle against criminals.
It wouldn't stop crime, but it sure would cause grief for them to get
around getting a proper Internet ID.
