Biggest problem is the protocol.
The biggest problem is the protocol, SMTP. Never designed with security in mind, yet people still insist that it be patched up with a gazillion bandages rather than create a protocol with authentication and encryption built into it. But nooo, they're too afraid about upsetting the Internet.

. . . and as long as that mindset holds, I'm afraid we'll always have spammers, even with their slim margins.
