Just Walk Away
I realize that most of the people on the internet are content junkies but the best way to deal with a for profit company that relies on sales to survive is to not buy their product. Don't download illegally and don't buy physical content. Listen to the FM radio for a change. (I know that is not the best solution as the content may be very substandard.) Also going to live music concerts is a way to support artist and cut out music companies.
Basically the internet is entering a time when large corporate interests are trying to carve it up into packets and profit from the ownership of those packets. This is inevitable, as soon as the very first advertising clip appeared the days of free information where over. If a consumer is still to have some control over what they buy, they need to start talking with their wallets. Music companies still exist because people still buy music from them. However many people have got a content addiction so it is almost impossible for the consumer to win. Believe it or Not, you can go an entire week with out listening to a song. You can go weeks with out seeing a television program or movie. You could read books and go to concerts. Learn to play your own musical instrument.
The solution, mass consumer boycott.
The result, the consumer is going to lose because very few will actually boycott content. The only thing that remains to be decided is how much the consumer loses when they log into the internet.
