RE: Federal charges in MySpace suicide case
People should be held accountable and culpable for their
actions, by law and by moral and ethical standards. Simple decency and respect seem to have flown away with the
freedom and "apparent" anonymity of the internet. It
seems to have brought out the best and the worst in
humanity. But, this incident is only one of thousands, I'm
certain, given what I've seen in user groups on-line. The
Internet is NOT a safe place for adults . . . let alone
unsupervised children. Nonetheless, everyone has to be
held strictly accountable for the choices they make to
cause harm to another individual. The second part of this
discussion certainly also needs to be around prevention.
Part of prevention is the keen awareness that there will be
a punishment for malicious actions. The rest of prevention
has to do with adults setting the example. And, it seems
to me that starts at home, with parents exhibiting
behaviours that children can learn. And this example goes
to the top . . . our government is ripe with such antics and
must be held accountable for it's indiscretions. When
children and teenagers see that our President can get away
with laughing at the law, then why shouldn't they? Our
social responsibility has lost all sense of morality. I think
this tragic story is only the tip of the iceberg. Freedom is
a wonderful benefit . . . but it carries with it a
preponderance of responsibility. Where that individual and corporate responsibility is shunned, where we abuse our
freedom and cause malicious harm, we loose access to
freedom.
