Indictment Sad Misplacement of Justice
Yes the suicide was tragic. There is no ignoring that fact. And yes Lori Drew acted improperly, but where is the line drawn? The line between being a mean person and being a criminal has now been blurred beyond recognition. When in 7th grade, I and another friend had been picked on by a mutual friend of ours. We lobbied behind the back of the aggressor with the rest of our friends and began a ruthless campaign of exclusion. In less than a week, in the middle of the 7th grade school year, this poor kid had to start completely over trying to find friends. In all reality, me and my co-conspirator were just the type of kids that got picked on, and it didn't stop no matter who our friends were. In hindsight we completely over reacted, and we all new it, but we never told each other until coming back from college. All of us in the "click" assumed the others wouldn't tolerate it. In order to completely ditch a once good friend a lot of propaganda needed to be spewed and we all talked up our hate beyond remedy. The poor guy we excluded turned out fine and made friends fast. What if he had the same state of mind as Megan though? He easily could have gone the same route and my conscience would have been destroyed for life. But should I have been locked up? We instead need to turn our efforts towards understanding what creates this behavior among teenagers and try to limit it as much as possible. We also need to train teachers to notice children at risk and help them get the help and confidence they need. Also we don't know the ultimate reason that caused Megan to do this. Immediately prior to her committing suicide she argued with her mother about her mom using a computer program to spy on her computer activities. I'm not blaming the mother, but there are multiple reasons, and you cannot lock up others for someone's overreaction.
