Ever talk to a Chinese student?
Talk to someone actually in China, particularly younger people. The "Great Firewall of China" is considered a joke by most people I've talked to, and in practice appears more like brownouts then any effective censorship organ.

I'd say in essence Bill Gates is right: You can't really censor the Internet without severely destroying its usefulness, anymore than you can censor the phone lines. The Firewall is there to remind people that the government is watching, but the information definitely still gets through, not necessarily by traditional outlets but young people are well versed in proxies, google cache, and any other number of mechanisms to read the full story.
