Having seen the insides of both US and UK government IT facilities -- I would suggest that the government is the LAST place personal data should be entrusted. (Unfortunately, there is no way to escape.)

Until laws are in place and actually enforced to severely punish those held responsible -- such events will continue to happen with frightening regularity because there is simply no accountability.

As I can detect, nobody has gone to jail or been severely fined for any of the last several disasters -- despite the lost data being worth BILLIONS on the black market.

The full consequences of these disasters won't be seen for years to come. Perhaps if a few of the government officials who appear on the records have THEIR identities stolen and their credit records destroyed -- something may hapen.
