TalkBack 1 of 1:
NYC broadband opposed by Verizon?
The distribution plant (wires and other outside facilities) of any ILEC (incumbent local exchange carrier i.e. Verizon) should be the property of the "people" as it is not unlike water, sewer, roads etc. Verizon, or for that matter, any phone company may claim they own the wires when they start to pay their property taxes on all ?their? outside plant wiring. I, as have others, been paying their property taxes on their outside plant for many years when their wires run over a right-of-way through my property.

The state should attach the LECs outside plant and contract with a third party for maintenance and further construction. Then all LECs and CLECs would have equal access which would bring about a truly "competitive market".

LECs have always protected their natural monopolies by leveraging access to these critical facilities to the disadvantage of the "competitors". It's a rigged game and unless the government reins in the carriers we'll never have an open and competitive marketplace.

Publicly supplied wireless internet access is in the public?s best interest and Verizon or any LEC should not be permitted to stand in its way. It will never be a premium service and Verizon will continue to offer advanced services for a price. But to try to restrict the advent of universal wireless access is simply strong-arming with the inherent power that they, as a monopoly, have accumulated while in their ?protected monopoly? status.

It?s time to change.
