Anyone is a reporter
William Safire is right--there's no distinction between anyone
dispensing information, whether it's an "official reporter" being paid,
or someone posting on a blog. There are enough laws on the books
already to compel anyone reporting anything to divulge sources if
necessary, or to prosecute them if they've impacted national security,
lied, etc. This is just another attempt to scare people into not
reporting things that should be reported. The usual boogeyman
situations are cited, which always strikes me as bizarre, since no law
actually prevents someone from leaking classified information, and
there are already laws that address that problem.
