Poor technical decisions ---
The FRC, later renamed the FCC, was established to license stations and prevent stations from interfering with each other. In other words, every frequency would have one, and only one signal on it in a given locality. Contrast that with the present situation, particularly on AM at night, where it is impossible to hear anything because there are too many stations on the air. Now - add it the debacle of AM stereo, where a wishy washy FCC did not select a standard, stick with it, and mandate its inclusion (the way they did teletext for the deaf on TVs). The result was a missed opportunity to improve the band. Now, they pick a technically inferior solution for AM in band on channel that will result in even more severe interference at night, and the loss of a vitally important resource for rural Americans - nighttime skywave reception. All so news talk stations can broadcast their commercials in stereo. Time to fire the lot of them, and populate the FCC with Engineers instead of politicians. Oh - but wait. Minority ownership has increased. Surely that must be more important than the usability of the broadcasting bands!
