And who caused this to happen?
In a world where the press has removed the lines between public and private life, very few people are even willing to give the press the time of day. Hour long interviews are cropped into 3 minute sound bites with the "reporter" deciding what part of what you said was important and discarding everything else. Quoting a partial sentence is even acceptable. And adding "appeal" to the story is standard fare. One needs look no further than right here at ZDNet and how headlines are used to "grab attention" of the reader and then backed away from in the article. It's not hard for me as a reader to see these headlines and imagine an Editor somewhere telling the reporter to "snazzy up" a headline. After all, that's the business they are in, selling headlines.

Of course that is rarely enough for the press when they need a story. Invading peoples private lives, following the spouse or kids around for a snap shot on a bad hair day, or as they like to say, "looking for the dirt" are all fair game in today's world.

Let me hand you a little something as food for thought. If people are hiding from the press and keeping their opinions to themselves when they once spoke freely, it's because the press has taught them not doing so is a very big mistake. Gutless? That may be, but some would call it plain old fashioned common sense...
