Way too soon for standards requirements.
I simply do not understand or agree with this "rush to establish a standard". Especially with streaming media.

New and better codecs are coming out at a furious rate. The technology has barely scratched the surface, and yet there are those like this author that want to put a stop to it and standardize on a format that will be obsolete in a year or less. No thanks!

Let the competition continue to develop better and faster compression. Let them work on delivering higher quality. Let the market place do it's job. After all, can anyone deny how much better streaming video is today compared to even 5 years ago? Imagine if five years ago people had decided AVI or MOV files with Cinepak codecs was as good as it was going to get so they made it the "standard".

So, I have to have two different "players" on my machine. No big deal, I have lots of storage space and I am more than capable of clicking on the right one. I would much rather have that than accept that what we see in streaming video today is as good as it will ever get and build an entire industry around it.
