SBC blew it with me
Thanks to number portability I'm in the process of moving my
15 year old home phone number to a VoIP line. Another phone
number was instantly assigned and I was operational by
plugging in the little grey box.

The best broadband SBC could offer me was 768K throttled to
384K and was down more often than not. Cable only became
available for broadband in this area in the last few _weeks_. Both
are typically $40-50/mo and tend to have very limiting service.

My ISP, for $50/mo gives me my own IP and I can do as I wish
with my 10Mbit wireless uplink running in the 5Ghz range. Yeah,
the service is so solid (for the last couple of years) that they're
also getting my phone line for $40/mo.

SBC won't give me a "unbundled" DSL circuit -- nor will they
bundle to my ISDN circuit which has been my "home phone"
line(s) and backup Internet (ISDN provided by ... SBC). The best
SBC can offer me is a $20/mo POTS line (*HAVE* to have it to get
DSL with ANYBODY) -- and today their offering (for an additional
$45/mo) unlimited national calling. That's $65/mo before I
pickup the phone and make a call.

No wonder I went wireless for broadband. Add in the VoIP line
for $40/mo (and I'm seeing it can be had for ~$25/mo) and I
don't have to pay anymore. All calls are free (US & Canada).
Unlimited. FREE. $40 and you're done. Three-way, call-
*transfer*, call-forwarding, call-id, call-waiting, voicemail --
those are all FREE perks. The phone companies will nickel and
dime you for each of these...

No wonder the office lines are being switched over to VoIP this
summer...
