You left out the CUSTOMER.
Not to nit pick (well ok maybe just a little) but I think many companies are not seeing the bigger picture of how this filters down to the consumer.

An example if I may. My son had a Ford car and it burned out part of the electronic ignition system. (We later found this is a common problem with older Ford ignitions.) Being a do it yourself sort he went to the auto parts dealer, got a replacement, installed it and all was fine, for about six months.

The thing is that he repaced the bad one with an identical replacement and the replacement had the same flaw. The long and short of it is that there indeed is an upgraded (problem fixed) module to prevent this from happening but neither my son nor the parts house, (or even the Ford dealers mechanic) knew anything about it.

Imagine a system though where Ford could change the part specification and that information was immediately disseminated to all the parts distributors and to Ford's on-line tech manuals. Such a simple thing could have saved my son about $300 and an entire afternoon's work.

My point being, it's not just about warehousing or controling costs and companies need to stop limiting it to that role...
