I'll also make the audacious claim that if one really thinks that software/recordings/books should be free, the right thing to do is to follow Richard Stallman's example by producing one's own freely sharable items and encouraging others to do likewise. Pirating copyrighted materials actually inhibits the production of low cost alternatives to the expensive "name brands" and reduces the negative consequences of overly restrictive licensing practices.

It might not be theft, in the same way that stealing an automobile is, but misappropriating copyrighted materials both illegal and morally dubious. It's also, for the reasons mentioned above, counterproductive. Much better to develop alternatives, though it's a lot more work.
