Making websites at that worked cross browser has never had ANYTHING to do with standards. Ever.
The collective sigh of relief when Netscape was finally laid to rest was almost audible.
Joel is not alone with this conviction. Every developer and GUI designer in the trenches knows that "Standards" are meaningless. The web is a mess. If anything it is common knowledge, that was succinctly summed up by the famed author Bruce Eckel.

That fact that the "standards" folks would rather be right then have 80% of the existing websites (including the masters at Google) be broken due adhering to non existing standards is rather telling of a mentality that is not reality based, but rather "standards based". - Posted by: Duke E.
