The Future of Computing
If Java doesn?t respond with its own parallel computing libraries, it will only help accelerate the adoption of .Net. Let?s see what the Java community does. I get the impression that many in the Java community don?t understand that when frameworks abstract away the complexities of computer programming, more programmers flock to them, because this allows application developers to stay focused on the business problems they are solving. The MS developer community mindset says that it makes no sense for ordinary developers to keep solving the same programming problem. Just solve the programming problem once in the framework or via third party components, and let ordinary developers focus on the unique parts of their business problems - while leveraging the work of others into their solutions.

I think MS has done a great job of adapting Windows to this Internet age, with the introduction of WPF, WCF, and other technologies. I think it is a great response to the threat of the browser. But I do believe just as how seminal applications like MS Office convinced users and developers about the future of the GUI, MS needs to produce unique connected desktop applications (e.g. as desktop MSN) that cause everyone to pause. I believe when people find these applications to be much more immersive and capable than their browser based counterparts, and when people see that they lead to increased ad revenue and sales, there will be a new land rush towards the desktop, and new categories of desktop software will emerge.
