Perhaps MS has learned that
it does not need to control the kernel or window manager to control the desktop space. If anything, having to deal with those two things has become more of a liability to MS than an asset. At least from a public relations point of view. So why not concentrate on cross-platform middleware which developers and consumers alike will flock to if it can deliver the same results? It makes sense.

Thinking about it from this angle makes me wonder how much KDE 4.0 has to do with any of this. Because that's about to invade Windows space, and it has an entire open source platform's worth of free high quality desktop applications to offer.
