You're missing the main act, John. The Government has just run through (with almost no debate) one of the greatest reductions in civil liberties in US history; the Government is now clear to collect, in real time and without oversight, the exact same data on everyone that HP is getting lynched for collecting on a few individuals.

Congress is reasserting its manhood and commitment to American values by using HP as the scapegoat.

Apparently someone has been studying Stalin: "To kill one person is murder, to kill a million is a mere statistic." Or, in current circumstances, heroic defence of the USA.
