From God To NASA
It wasn't my intention that the talkbacks to my last post would take such a theological bent, but so what? The discussion was interesting, and special thanks to P. Douglas for single-handedly fending off hordes of godless geeks.

It was a fun discussion. Thanks for, albeit unintentionally, creating the opportunity. (Now if someone would actually listen to what I have to say on the topic. Sigh.)

Regarding NASA and space exploration: maybe the government should create a bounty for the first company that can get a spacecraft to Mars, with a promise to pick up part of the tab for the companies that enter the competition. I think overall NASA and the government would save a lot of money, and you would see a lot of innovation in many areas. As a general principle, when you democratize something, you get the best results. (Also, the government could look at ways at recovering its costs through e.g. co-ownership patent deals with the companies.) NASA should really bring in smart people to help monetize the huge amount of innovation such a competitive program could generate.
