I have an issue with some of your reasoning...

"For example, when you?re shipping photos to someone else. Can you imagine the conversation now? ?Hi Susan. I got something for you as surprise. But to get it, you need to drive down to your local drugstore to pick it up.?

Well you pick up the photos @ CVS etc and send them out yourself to whom ever.
