Flash and Google Toolbar
This is not too dissimilar from the Flash installer that also wants to install the Google Toolbar. Except that this is an opt-in and Flash with the Google Toolbar is an opt-out. You can also see this with Adobe Acrobat Reader, which wants to install Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition. I work as an IT consultant and I often end up training end users or removing viruses from their systems. I can't tell you how many times I've asked people if they wanted to have the Google Toolbar or Adobe Photoshop Album Started Edition. In some cases they did, but usually the answer is, "I have no idea how it got there." I agree with your article about invasive advertising, but it is nothing in my mind compared to drive-by, opt-out installs that are delivered by updates.
