Address the DPI issue?
The other point that you should probably address has to do with the DPI of the output device being used to view a picture. A 500x300 pixel image viewed on an LCD with its lower DPI (72 IIRC) looks a lot larger than the same picture printed out on a laser printer at 300 or 600 DPI.

As for the digital camera, the more important number would be capture speed (essentially shutter speed) especially when it comes to action photos like your eagle in flight. The long zoom you're using and some slight motion can make it very very hard to get a clear image.
