This has been in Asia for years
I remember the Computer Chronicles (when the show was still on the air) back in 2000 was showing that customers in Singapore, or someplace in that region (maybe Japan?) were able to remotely order and pay for movie tickets from their cell phone, or purchase something at a store, using the mechanism described here. The cell phone transmitted information to the vendor's system, required the entry of a PIN by the user on the phone, and voice verification by the user (the user got a call from the credit card company on the spot). After all this had been done, the transaction was consumated. Seems a little inconvenient for grocery shopping, but I think it would work out at a department or specialty store. Stewart Chiefet, the host of the show, predicted that someday we in the U.S. would be doing this. It looks like the technology has finally arrived. I wonder what took it so long.
