All it takes is overwhelming public abrobation
It is only in response to overwhelming public abrobation that Microsoft have released this patch in anything resembling a timely manner. If it had not been for such public public discussion, Microsoft would have done nothing - well they would have released a patch eventually, probably.

Microsoft's security priorities are not those of it's customers, they never have been.

Priority number 1, for Microsoft, is secure the software so that it is impossible to make illegal copies, or to use a legal copy illegally.

Priority Number 2 is Secure the system so that non approved (that's non approved by Microsoft) software won't run on it. This is to enable Microsoft's business plan, which is to sell multiple versions of the same Operating system, each of which can run software the other cannot - not because the software won't run, but because Microsoft are blocking it from running.

3. Make sure that all of the software is integrated at a very deep level, so that the operating system and the applications act as if they are a single application. (this is the major reason why Microsoft's Operating systems are so insecure)

4 Overlay the system with a security paradigm that does not interfeer with 1,2 and 3 above So that they can sell into the Business and Enterprise sector. The Microsoft security paradigm does very little for the home user.

5 Allow others to provide security software, so long as that security software does not interfeer with points 1 2 and 3.

6 Respond to security issues only when publicly doing so makes Microsoft look good, otherwise say nothing.
