DRM Is An Invasion of Privacy
If someone from Sony BMG is reading this, don't worry, I don't do file sharing, I'm not going to upload the songs to the web for anyone to download and I'm not going to burn a thousand, or even 3, CDs and redistribute them. I am, however, going to enjoy the music I bought and paid for legally for without worrying about DRM software and spyware on my machine. Isn't that how it should be?

Duh! I must admit that I used be a fan of (at least the concept of) DRM. But I?m becoming increasing antagonistic with DRM, when I think through the implications of the technology. As far as I can see, it is all about control on the part of content providers. DRM simply gives too much control to content providers, and this scares me. I don?t want content and DRM technology providers (who seem more in bed with each other than with consumers) regulating how I use their content privately. It is perfectly fine with me if content providers say, ?I don?t care what you do with my content privately, but the minute you use or distribute it illegally, I?ll be on you like a ton of bricks?. But content providers are saying with DRM, ?Once you have my content, we reserve the right to dictate everyway you use it.? As far as I?m concerned, DRM is an invasion of privacy, and the industry would be much better off using watermarking to deter piracy of digital content.
